Quick Answer / Security Standard

A 6-digit numeric PIN provides 1,000,000 unique combinations (19.9 bits of entropy). Paired with smartphone hardware delays (Apple Secure Enclave, Android Titan M2), it renders brute-force shoulder-surfing attacks impractical.

Why 6 Digits Is the Modern Smartphone Passcode Standard

Starting with iOS 9 and modern Android versions, major smartphone manufacturers upgraded the default device passcode from 4 digits to 6 digits. This 2-digit expansion increases total combinations from 10,000 to 1,000,000 (a 100× security multiplier).

The Hardware Delay Shield

Smartphones do not allow rapid automated PIN attempts. Apple's Secure Enclave Processor (SEP) and Android's Titan M2 security chip enforce exponential hardware throttling:

  • Attempts 1–5: Instant entry allowed.
  • Attempt 6: 1-minute lockout.
  • Attempt 7: 5-minute lockout.
  • Attempt 8: 15-minute lockout.
  • Attempt 9: 1-hour lockout.
  • Attempt 10: Device wiped completely (if "Erase Data" is enabled in settings).

Because an attacker can attempt at most 10 guesses before device erasure, the probability of guessing a random 6-digit PIN is 10 in 1,000,000 (0.001%).

Frequently asked questions

Why did Apple switch to 6-digit passcodes?

A 6-digit passcode offers 1,000,000 possible combinations compared to only 10,000 for a 4-digit PIN, making shoulder surfing and opportunistic guessing 100 times harder.

What 6-digit PINs should I avoid?

Avoid sequences like 123456, 111111, 000000, 121212, 654321, 666666, and birthdays (e.g., MMDDYY or DDMMYY).

Is a 6-digit PIN better than Face ID or Touch ID?

Biometrics (Face ID/Touch ID) provide convenience, but your 6-digit PIN is the master encryption key that unlocks the Secure Enclave upon reboot. A strong 6-digit PIN is vital for device security.

Can this 6-digit PIN be used for SIM cards?

Yes. It is ideal for SIM card PINs, carrier account port-out PINs, and smart lock deadbolts.
