Quick Answer / Security Standard

Under PCI DSS v4.0 Requirement 8.3.6, all authentication credentials accessing cardholder data must contain at least 12 characters. A random 12-character password yields 78.6 bits of entropy and 83 million years of offline crack resistance.

The 12-Character Password Standard Under PCI DSS v4.0

Effective March 2025, the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS v4.0) officially retired the legacy 8-character minimum password rule in favor of Requirement 8.3.6, which mandates a strict minimum length of 12 characters containing both alphabetic and numeric characters.

Why the 8-Character Password Is Dead

An 8-character password using standard alphanumeric characters provides only 47.6 bits of entropy. A single modern server with 8 Nvidia RTX 4090 GPUs running Hashcat can exhaust the entire 8-character alphanumeric keyspace in just 36 minutes.

By upgrading the length from 8 characters to 12 characters, the keyspace expands exponentially from \(62^8 \approx 2.18 \times 10^{14}\) to \(94^{12} \approx 4.76 \times 10^{23}\). This 4-character increase expands search time by a factor of over 2 billion, transforming a 36-minute crack time into 83 million years.

Entropy Comparison: 8 vs. 12 vs. 16 Characters

Password Length Character Pool Entropy Bits GPU Crack Time (100B/s) Compliance Status
8 characters Alphanumeric (62) 47.6 bits ~36 minutes Non-Compliant (Failed)
12 characters All Sets (94) 78.6 bits ~83 Million Years PCI DSS v4.0 Compliant
16 characters All Sets (94) 104.9 bits > 6.8 Trillion Years NIST / CISA Standard

Frequently asked questions

Is a 12-character password compliant with PCI DSS 4.0?

Yes. PCI DSS v4.0 Requirement 8.3.6 requires authentication passwords to be at least 12 characters long and contain both numeric and alphabetic characters. The Pass Key generator pre-configures these settings automatically.

Can hackers crack a 12-character password?

A random 12-character password containing letters, numbers, and symbols has 78.6 bits of entropy and would take over 83 million years to crack with modern GPU clusters.

Should I use 12 characters for my banking accounts?

12 characters is the acceptable minimum for PCI DSS compliance. However, for sensitive bank accounts, primary email, and password manager vaults, we recommend 16 to 20 characters for extra safety.

Are 12-character passphrases better than 12-character passwords?

A 12-character password generated with random symbols and letters provides 78.6 bits of entropy, which is stronger than a 12-character word-based phrase. For passphrases, you should use at least 4 to 5 words (20+ characters).
